PILADE BERTIERI Turin, 1874 – Rome 1965), a pupil of Grosso and Tallone, Giacomo Balla’s first teacher and friend, was internationally regarded as an exceptional portraitist, with great technical and psychological finesse, often compared to Sargent.
He lived in New York, Paris, London, Florence and Rome. In the last decades of his long life, he developed a very personal style, which he called “La commedia umana” (The Human Comedy), in which the psychological aspect emerges with such force that it distorts the features, but always nourished by a deep compassion for humanity.
The spiritual tension that has always pervaded his work leads him to observe everything with equal attention.
The pointillist landscapes of the early 1900s are works of rare mastery; the still lifes of the 1940s reveal a moving search for vivid colour, due to his impending blindness.
On display at AMART 2025 is a precious collection of oil paintings on canvas that have never before left the artist’s studio and are displayed here, as in a period studio, with fabrics designed by Mariano Fortuny, a
contemporary of Bertieri.
As part of the rediscovery of the artist, an exhibition curated by Achille Bonito Oliva is being prepared in New York.
